Robert (Bob) Blewett Obituary

Robert John Arthur (Bob) Blewett - December 31, 1935 to April 22, 2022

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Robert John Arthur (Bob) Blewett at age 86 at Health Sciences North in Sudbury.

Born in Pakenham, Ontario in the Ottawa Valley, Bob arrived in Elliot Lake with members of his immediate and extended family in 1956, beginning a 65 year odyssey which would cement him as a true pillar of the community.

From the beginning, Bob was a quintessential volunteer providing leadership to numerous organizations including Minor Sports, the Municipal Parks and Recreation Committee, Holy Trinity United Church and the Elliot Lake Curling Club. He was an original member of the Arena Fund Committee and played an integral role in the construction of Centennial Arena.

Along the way, he began dating an Ottawa Valley girl by the name of Ruth Wilson (predeceased September, 2014). They were married in July, 1963 and Ruth moved to Elliot Lake where she and Bob started a family. Son, David was born in July, 1964 and daughter, Cathy arrived in March, 1967.

In addition to his passion for his family and volunteering, Bob loved to create. He is responsible for much of the cabinetry and other woodwork in his home on Central Avenue. Bob was also an accomplished artisan, spending hours in his ‘shop' making pens, earrings, letter openers and more out of the various types of wood he came across in his travels. Measure twice and cut once was one of his favourite sayings - and his attention to detail was unparalleled.

Bob spent 35 years working for Rio Algom Ltd., the majority of that time as a well-respected Machinist Leader. When he retired from Rio in 1990, he and Ruth travelled some while he continued his volunteering ways. The days were few and far between that Bob wasn't seen making his stops around town in his Toyota truck. At Christmas, he would throw on his Santa Claus suit and spread a little cheer at various businesses in Elliot Lake (though it got him in trouble at a bank one year).

Bob is survived by his son David, his daughter Cathy (Fraser Gartside), granddaughter Lily, his brother Howard (JoAnn) as well as numerous cousins and nieces and nephews of many generations.

A memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday, May 25th, 2022 from 6 - 8pm from the Holy Trinity United Church Fellowship Hall and the service will take place on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at 11:00 am from Holy Trinity Church with the Reverend Cory Vermeer-Cuthbert officiating. Interment to follow in Woodlands Cemetery, Elliot Lake.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Holy Trinity United Church or the St. Joseph Hospital foundation would be greatly appreciated.

Bob Blewett was a humble man, a good man and a true legend in his community. He will be missed.
