Mervyn McCormick Obituary

I am heartbroken to share that my best friend and husband of 60 years, Mervyn McCormick, died on January 24, 2025 after a battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Merv is survived by spouse Clarice (nee Twaddle); daughter Tolleen (John); son Derek; grandsons Ben (Heather), Jesse (Mary), Andrew, Jacob (Karen), and Wyatt; great-grandsons Caleb and Arlo; stepsister Millie (Edward); brother-in-law Bill (late Cecilia), and sisters-in-law Queenie (late Floyd), and Mary (late John); as well as many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his mother Mary Alice (nee Reid), brothers-in-law Bruce (late Sandy) and Alec (late Nora) and stepsister Barbara (late John). Mervyn was born in Scotland, emigrating to Canada with his mother at the age of five and grew up in Toronto and Newmarket. We had a whirlwind romance, marrying in 1964. We lived in several provinces with our family during his 32 years in the Canadian Military, before he retired as a Master Warrant Officer in 1985. Merv continued supporting the armed forces as a civilian before we operated our own restaurant until retiring to picturesque Elliot Lake in 2014. Merv was an active participant in our Church and a leader in many organizations including The Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, and Shriners. He enjoyed many hobbies, including stamp and coin collecting and model railroading. He was a passionate bridge player achieving the status of Gold Life Master with ACBL. Merv loved to experience new people and places and we explored the world, creating memories I will treasure of our life together. He loved his family and friends with his whole heart; his generosity was a cornerstone of his personality and he touched the lives of all who knew him. Merv’s funeral will be held in the early spring at St. Peter’s Anglican Church Elliot Lake. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Shriner’s Children’s hospital.
