Donald Leslie Major

It is with profound sadness and love that we announce the passing of Donald Leslie Major, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and a friend to many.

Don passed away on Monday, April 6, 2026 at St. Joseph’s General Hospital, Elliot Lake at the age of 89.

Don was a long time resident of Elliot Lake and a retiree of Rio Algom Mines. He was born along with his twin brother, Dennis, on Nov 17, 1936 in Williamstown, Ont., the son of the late David Major and Germaine Brunet.

Don lived a full and meaningful life defined by his kindness, sense of humour, a strong work ethic, a love of the outdoors, his creativity and a deep love of his family.

Don was a devoted loving husband and best friend of Iona for 65 years. Together they built a wonderful fun-filled life. He was a loving father to Brian (deceased) wife Johanne and Norman (Carole) and an adopted father to Keith Grahl (Joan). The bonds he shared was one of the most important part of his life.

He was a cherished grandfather to Eric (Victoria) and Andrea (Wesley) and a very special great grandfather to Tristan, Skylar, Brayden and Calvin.

Don is predeceased by his siblings Joe, David, Lucy, Aldina, Cecil, Dennis, sisters-in-law Mary and Marielle, and brothers-in-law Denis and David. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, sister-in-law Claudette and Iona’s sister Marie and brother Corbet (Susan).

Don was an active member of the Elliot Lake Knights of Columbus, the Elliot Lake Rod and Gun Club, the Elliot Lake Snowbird Snowmobile Club, and the Northshore Fisheries where he was involved with the fish stocking of the many lakes in the area.

Don loved his moose hunting, fishing and the many outings at his camp on the Kindiogami River with family and friends.

Cremation has taken place. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2026 at Ste. Bernadette Parish in Elliot Lake. Burial to follow in Woodlands Cemetery.
