William (Ted) Hyndman

Hyndman, William Walter Edward (Ted)
February 12,1935- February 12, 2022

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Ted on his 87th Birthday at Hõpital Montfort Ottawa with his family close by. Husband, Father, Grandfather and friend to anyone who crossed paths with him. Predeceased by his parents Walter and Margaret Hyndman and Stepmother Cora.

Survived by his Wife of 64 years, Betty (Hannah) , his 3 children Craig, Andrea ( Satnam), Michael (Lenore) and their 4 children Tyler, Aiden, Conner and Hannah,
Stepbrother Arthur (Elizabeth) Appleton.

Ted(Badge#1801) was a proud member and 30 year veteran of the Ontario Provincial Police serving from September 1957 -September 1987. His whole career was spent in Elliot Lake via a very short stopover in Sault Ste Marie. Right from the very beginning his involvement in Community service exceeded far beyond the boundaries of police work, volunteering for many local organizations such as Special Olympics, Terry Fox Run, Teen Town program, and many others that required his time. A respected member of the Knights of Columbus Elliot Lake. Whether it was basketball, hockey, judo, both youth and adult community programs or sports teams, fundraising and or coordinating any or all, Ted was there.

To say he loved the community of Elliot Lake is an understatement. Ted was community and community was Ted. A leader in every sense of the word. He always put families and community's needs far ahead of his own.

He had a smile that would light up the darkest of spaces, a personality second to none and if you had the pleasure of encountering either, you knew you were in good hands.

Visitation will be held at the Elliot Lake Funeral Chapel & Cremation Centre (36 Ontario Ave) on Thursday May 19 from 4-6 pm. A Funeral mass will be celebrated at Saint Bernadette Catholic Church, 45 Spruce Ave., Elliot Lake on Fri. May 20,2022 at 11 am. Friends and family are invited to attend a reception at The Hampton Inn Maple Room following the Funeral Mass.

Dear Betty and family…I am very sorry to hear of Ted’s passing. The obituary said it all. Ted was an incredible community minded person who seemed to be everywhere…at every community event, sports and youth events, at ELSS refereeing BB. Everyone knew and loved Ted. I will never forget how we so often met at ELSS on Feb 12 to wish each other happy birthday. He liked it when I said we were twins, a few years apart! This past Feb 12, I was celebrating with friends and Ted’s name came up, little did we know that would be his last birthday. I will remember Ted fondly and am thankful for all he did for this fantastic community. Ted, you will be greatly missed by all.love and hugs…Jane

May our memories of friendship last forever. The laughs, the bike rides, the basketball taunts from the bleachers. But most of all the memories of a man with such a great sense of humour, integrity beyond untouchable, honest to the core and humility to the end.
You stood tall always .
If anyone stands out as a community minded individual it would be you. Your community involvement in Elliot Lake remains untouched. Not only in Elliot lake but areas beyond where you have touched so many lives. You will be dearly missed.

We were saddened to hear the news that Ted has passed away. He was an amazing example of what every person should strive to be. He occupies a special place among our Elliot Lake memories. When Ted found he shared a birthday with Tristan he dubbed him his "Little Buddy" and they exchanged birthday cards for several years. We know that Ted was not only big "Big Buddy" to Tristan, but was the same for many of the youth in Elliot Lake. We send our condolences to the family of this special man.

Sue and Mark Maggs

Dear Betty and family,
Our sincere condolences on Ted’s passing. You are in our thoughts and we wish you love and support at this difficult time.

Greg Humbert

My sincerest sympathy to Betty and her children on the loss of a “larger than life” husband and father. To many he was “Mr. Elliot Lake” but he was also a man of deep faith as I came to know when I served as a priest in Elliot Lake. His sense of justice was humane; his willing to help others, generous; his bigness of stature no match to his gentleness of heart. Who could not love “The Corp.” We are richer for knowing him and poorer for his passing. My prayers go out to the family in their grieving, but also in gratitude for having known Ted and Betty. Bless you all.

Jodie Finamore

My deep seat condolences to you Betty and your whole family. Ted has always had a very special place in my heart and he will stay there forever. The city of Elliot Lake has lost another of their greats.

Rest In Peace my dear friend. Until we meet again. Love always In Living Colour xoxox
