SMITH – Ross Montgomery
April 25, 1952 to May 26, 2021

Ross passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at the age of 69 years following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Toronto, Ross moved to Elliot Lake with his family in Grade 7, graduated from Laurentian University with a degree in biology, and then moved to B.C. to help his parents build their retirement home on Kootenay Lake.
He loved tenting, hiking and cross-country skiing in the mountains but work took him to Calgary, Alberta, where he worked as a computer programmer. He was able to devote so many volunteer hours to the Sam Livingston Fish Hatchery, he was finally hired. He retired to Milton, Ontario where he bought a motorcycle and spent many hours on the open road riding with biker buddies throughout the province and then two motorcycle trips to the West. Through all this he never forgot Elliot Lake and when the opportunity presented, he returned to the land he loved. He coped with health issues from an early age and found solace in nature so he never saw a lake he didn’t want to explore, and never saw a fish he didn’t want to kiss. However, he spent many a summer’s evening parked in town, standing near his motorcycle, drinking coffee, smoking a cigar, listening to his tunes, and talking to anyone who cared to pass the time with him.
Ross was predeceased by his parents Bruce and Mary (Ewart), and is survived by his loving and devoted wife Jacqueline Roy; brother Bruce of Lethbridge, and his children Brooke, Ivan and Laurel; sister Bonnie of Calgary and her children Garett and Shayla; and sister-in-law Deb of Calgary.
Many thanks to the doctors and nursing staff in Sudbury and Elliot Lake for their care and compassion for Ross, and to friends and neighbours who helped him during his last illness.
According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and an autumn Celebration on Life will be held at a date yet to be determined. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to their charity of choice

Jackie, we were saddened to read the news of Ross’ passing. We did so much enjoy our dinner outings last year...especially Ross’ unique sense of humour! We are thinking of you at this time and hope to chat or meet sometime soon.
