Mrs. Shirley Margaret Shields (nee Stevens) – Born St. Catharines Ontario January 25th 1927 passed in Elliot Lake, October 8th, 2019, predeceased by her husband Thomas R. Shields, Staff Inspector York Regional Police and WWII Veteran of the Canadian 1st Special Service Forces (SSF). Loving sister of Jean (predeceased) and survived by her sister Marion of St. Catharines, Ontario.
Shirley is survived by her 5 children who she deeply loved and cherished, and for whom she lived and loved always; Craig Shields (wife Debbie), Roderick Shields (wife Lesley), Janice (husband Luke Scully), Bruce Shields (wife Jan Nybida), and Lesley (husband Bill Dunlop).
Her wonderfully long list of loving grandchildren, each one of which she was truly grateful for and proud of; Jeff and Heather; Aisha, Stephanie, and Jaymie; Jennifer, Sarah, Hayley, & Tyler; Hayden and Beatrix; Holly and Aaron. Shirley was proud to also have 15 great-grandchildren with another due October 18th.
Shirley passed peacefully in Elliot Lake, her home of more than 30 years, with her loving daughter Jan by her side. Never one to ‘put anyone out’ she lived independently, and with great appreciation, until the few weeks before her passing where she received care at St. Joseph’s General Hospital, Elliot Lake. Shirley loved her dog Teddy who predeceased her a little over a year and half ago. Teddy kept her spry, and spritely in her aging and walked Shirley daily come rain, snow, or shine! She lovingly tended to his unwieldly fur and high maintenance ways and he tended to her soul. They are reunited now in the afterlife for more walks and adventures!
Her final resting place will be with her husband Tom at the Eglin Mills Cemetery in Richmond Hill, Ontario.
A memorial visitation for her cherished Elliot Lake friends will be held on Friday October 18th, 2019 from 1pm – 3pm at Elliot Lake Funeral Chapel & Cremation Centre (36 Ontario Avenue).
We wish to extend our deepest condolences to Bruce, wife Jan and to all of your family and friends.
Dear Shirley: you have been the best mother-in-law that a daughter in-law could ever have had for the past 44 years. I will miss our phone visits dearly. Thanks for everything you have done for us. Love always
Our Condolences to the family. Shirley will for sure be missed. She was the best neighbor always had a smile on her face. I always enjoyed our conversations. Even molly our boxer dog enjoyed visiting with her. She never asked for a hand although we were always there willing to help. Rest in paradise.
Always will miss you.
Heather & Jay
My sincere condolences
